Meenna Announces Taku Sugimoto's Septet

Meenna, the Improvised Music From Japan sublabel focused on group releases, has just announced a new album composed by Taku Sugimoto. The album is simply entitled Septet and will be released on November 29th. You can hear samples from the album above. The album is taken from a live recording of the piece's world premiere at NK Project in Berlin back in March. The album is 38 minutes long and features Rebecca Lane, Michael Thieke, Johnny Chang, Koen Nutters, Derek Shirley, Bryan Eubanks, and Taku Sugimoto himself. The press release for the album describes it as such:

This composition is conceived of as a sort of double concertino for clarinet, flute, and small ensemble. However, the two main instruments, clarinet and flute, make no melody: the one tone is shared and repeated by them. I want to have the other instruments (viola, cello, contrabass, guitar, and sine-tone generator) work as if they are drawing several spectrums with the sound of the clarinet or flute, so each of these instruments has a specific set of microtones to play. In order to make it easier to produce those microtones, the stringed instruments are tuned anomalously; only harmonics or open strings are played. The very low frequencies are produced only by the sine-tone generator, since these frequencies are too low to play with any musical instrument except piano.

You can read more information about the album here.

Stream New Albums from Loren Chasse and Rafael Toral

Notice Recordings have just released their final pair of albums for the year. One release comes from Portland musician Loren Chasse and is entitled The Sodden Floor. The album was recorded from 2011-2014 and is comprised of four intimate drones. The other new release comes from Rafael Toral and is a live recording taken from his set with drummer Alfonso Simões at All Tomorrow’s Parties in 2010. The album is called Space Collective 2 Live. You can read press releases for both albums below.

Loren Chasse - The Sodden Floor:

Portland, Ore. musician and naturalist Loren Chasse has a long and varied history within the more organic and textural branches of drone and sound art. Comprising pregnant field recordings, tense drone whispers, and wispy layers of texture, The Sodden Floor’s dark superimpositions drift between momentary dread and almost childlike abstraction. They seem composed with an eye on cinema: sounds drift into focus and then cut or pan away; the resulting shifts constitute a dreamlike presence only sustainable within an ephemeral world, one documented with a half-awake awareness — leaving or coming — but always accepting the flittering yet immovable mise-en-scène aesthetic of non-existence.

Rafael Toral - Space Collective 2 Live:

Space Collective 2 Live commemorates Portuguese musician Rafael Toral’s first U.S. tour in several years. Since the 1990s, Toral has been primarily known for his guitar work, but has since been working on the Space Program project, within which he has probed visceral and personal components of electronic music performance, and how they relate to the performer's experience, not to the resultant product.

These recordings, taken from a live set at All Tomorrow’s Parties in 2010, find Toral performing with drummer Alfonso Simões, developing sparse, deep textures with triggers and modular oddities. Smartly paced and absolutely blistering at times, this set touches on a variety of surprising tones: flute-like expressions, spacey warbles, and intricately patterned arpeggios that dissolve into drone sections with confrontational sonic palettes.

You can stream both albums above or on the label's bandcamp page here. Both releases are limited to 100 copies and come with an immediate digital download. Digital copies will become available at a reduced price once the physical cassettes are sold out.

The Edges Ensemble performed on previous Another Timbre discs including Michael Pisaro's Fields Have Ears, James Saunders' Imperfections On The Surface Are Occasionally Apparent, and the Wandelweiser Und So Weiter box set. Another Timbre will also release a new album by Jürg Frey. The record is entitled Circles and Landscapes and has six solo piano pieces performed by Philip Thomas. Another Timbre released an album from Frey earlier this year entitled Grizanna and other pieces 2009-2014. Download the Remastered Edition of Jamie Drouin & Lance Austin Olsen's GARDEN_NIGHT

Jamie Drouin and Lance Austin Olsen started working together in the mid-90s and eventually ended up making their own record label, Infrequency Editions, in 2001. The two have just put up a remastered version of their 2003 album GARDEN_NIGHT as a free/pay what you want download on the label's bandcamp page here. The press release for the album is as follows:

This re-mastered Drouin & Olsen recording from 2003 is an intriguing document for two main reasons:
First, as an example of the initial Infrequency experimental music concerts we presented at the Martin Batchelor Gallery in Victoria, BC Canada - even though our audience often consisted of one person, in this case, local artist Jeffrey Allport.
Second, it is a reminder to Lance and myself that, no matter how far we feel our work has shifted over the intervening years, this early recording, made in a time of our relative naïveté (having only recently transitioned from visual artists to sound in 2000), and secluded from the outside sound art world, already contains a remarkable affinity to our current sensibilities.
In these regards, GARDEN_NIGHT becomes a two-way mirror - allowing us to simultaneously look back, forward, and through our oeuvre. We hope you enjoy the process as well.

Earlier this month, Jamie Drouin released KICK 1 & 2. The album is based around the sound of a kick drum and "is intended as a repeating sculptural installation for two speakers." You can stream and purchase the recording here.

Gabi Losoncy Releases 'Two-Part YouTube Drama' Manhattan Story

Gabi Losoncy, who was one-half of the now-defunct Good Area, has just released a new 'two-part YouTube drama' entitled Manhattan Story. As with many of her other solo releases since Good Area's demise, Manhattan Story is a field recording-based work that's presented in an ostensibly straightforward manner. The release is split into two parts any you can hear both in full below. Those are the covers above.

In other news, Losoncy recently contributed a track to Nick Klein's Phormix Podcast. The track is called "302,000,000" and you can hear it here. Her track appears around 43:45. A Good Area track also appeared on Alien Passengers' Milk of the seer beast compilation. Next year, a collaborative album between Losoncy and Matthew Krefting will come out via ErstAEU.
